Laser Eye Surgery Process

The Assessment

If you decide to proceed with LASIK treatment, we’ll schedule a convenient date for you. Our practice manager will send you written confirmation of the appointment. They’ll tell you when to arrive for treatment and give you an approximate time for your procedure.

The week before surgery, we’ll send you a letter with details what to do and what to avoid before surgery.

If you have any questions before surgery contact us before the day. We want you to feel informed about the procedure before you arrive for your Laser Eye Surgery.

The Treatment

Although the operation itself takes only a few minutes, you will be at the hospital for about 2 hours. Before the Laser Eye Surgery, you will meet your surgeon again and review the consent form.

Some patients choose to have a mild sedative before the procedure to help them relax. If you feel this would make you more comfortable, please discuss this with us before you scheduled surgery date.

Treatment takes about 20 minutes in all. It is not painful and does not hurt, but you may feel a mild discomfort or sensation of pressure.

Once we complete your Laser Eye Surgery, you will be able to relax and close your eyes for a little while. The surgeon will examine you and gives you the all clear to go home. At this stage, your eyes may feel as if there is something in them or sting a little. You might feel as if you are looking through a shower curtain.

Following your Laser Eye Surgery, we prescribe drops to help your eyes heal. Use these as instructed. We also give you an instruction list of things to do and things to avoid after your Laser Eye Surgery. We’ll give you an emergency contact number to use should you have any concerns.

You will need someone to drive you home, as your eyes will take a short time to settle. Once home we recommend you take a nap for a couple of hours and get a good night’s sleep. The next morning your eyes will feel much more comfortable. At this stage, some patients have said they feel as though they have worn their lenses for longer than usual.

The Results

You may notice a dramatic improvement in vision within the first 24 hours following surgery. In some patients, this change takes a little longer.

We suggest you take a day off work and plan a light schedule for 2-3 days. It may take another day or two to be able to resume all your regular activities.

Your surgeon will review you within 48 hrs of surgery then check you one week and one month after surgery. If you need further visits, we will arrange them as necessary.
