LASIK PATIENT MANAGEMENT

Grange Eye Consultants logo

How your LASIK treatment will be managed by
Grange Eye Consultants

Mr.Keith Bates Consultant Ophthalmic SurgeonPre-op assessment
More information about the initial consultation is available on the Assessment page of this website.

Following your consultation, if you decide to proceed with LASIK treatment, a convenient date for you will be scheduled by the Practice Manager. You will then receive written confirmation of the appointment, be advised of a time to arrive for treatment, and be given an approximate time for your procedure.

The week before surgery you will receive a letter giving you details of the do’s and don’ts before surgery.

If you have any questions before surgery, however trivial, it is essential that you contact us before the day. We want you to feel fully informed about the procedure before you arrive for your treatment.

Although the operation itself takes only a few minutes, you will be at the hospital for about 2 hours. Before the procedure you will meet your surgeon again and review the consent form.

Some patients choose to have a mild sedative prior to the procedure to help them relax. If you feel this would make you more comfortable you can discuss this with us once you arrive.

Treatment takes about 20 minutes in all. It is not painful and does not hurt, but a mild discomfort or sensation of pressure may be felt.

Once your procedure is complete, you will be able to relax and close your eyes for a little while before the surgeon examines you and gives you the all clear to go home. At this stage your eyes may feel as if there is something in them or sting a little.

Following your treatment we prescribe drops to help your eyes heal, which you should use as instructed. We also give you an instruction list of do’s and don’ts and an emergency contact number should you have any concerns.

You will need someone to drive you home, as your eyes will take a short time to settle. Once home we recommend you take a nap for a couple of hours and get a good nights sleep. The next morning your eyes will feel considerably more comfortable. At this stage, some patients have said their eyes feel as though they had just worn their lenses for longer than usual.

You may notice dramatic visual results within the first 24 hours following surgery, but in some patients this change takes a little longer. We suggest you take a day off work and plan a light schedule for 2-3 days. It may take an additional day or two to be able to resume all of your regular activities.

Your surgeon will review you within 48 hrs of surgery then check you 1 week and 1 month after surgery. If further visits are required they will be arranged as necessary.
