The
ARTISAN lens
This
lens is sometimes referred to as the ‘iris-claw’ lens
as it is placed in the anterior chamber of the eye and clips
onto the iris so that it remains central in the eye and cannot
move. It is therefore able to correct astigmatism as well as
extremely high degrees of myopia (up to -23.5 diopters).
The
ARTISAN lens, manufactured in Holland, was first implanted in
1986. However it is the general increased awareness of refractive
surgery in recent years, driven by the laser market, that has
increased demand for Phakic IOLs as more patients consider the
benefits of freedom from glasses and/or contact lenses.
The
ICARE Lens
This
new lens, made in France, is designed to treat severely short-sighted
patients. It is folded and then surgically placed inside the
anterior chamber through a narrow incision in the peripheral
cornea. The flexible ‘haptics’ hold the
lens in place and to aid this it comes in different sizes to
fit your eye. Your surgeon will order the lens specifically
for you after conducting some precise measurements. The Icare
lens is made from
a hydrophilic acrylic material containing water which has already
been used for many years in ophthalmology.
The ICARE lens is available in powers to treat short-sighted
patients with a prescription ranging from -5 to -20 diopters.
The PRL Lens
The
PRL (Phakic Refractive Lens) is a foldable, silicon, posterior
chamber Phakic refractive lens designed to float on the eye's
natural lens.
