At
Grange Eye Consultants we are not simply a laser centre but
a comprehensive ophthalmic practice. That means we work with
you to identify the very best procedure for your eyes and lifestyle.
With
this aim, in early 2004 we introduced CustomVue™ wavefront-guided
custom laser treatment. Although LASIK and
LASEK surgery are both very safe, some patients have a more
complex profile due to their pupil size, large refractive
error, considerable higher order aberrations, a need for
re-treatment or concerns over night vision. For these patients
we recommend CustomVue, as it allows the surgeon to better
accommodate the unique characteristics of your eyes.
Wavefront-guided
laser treatment is an option for people who are short-sighted,
long-sighted or who have astigmatism. It has been widely publicised
recently as the latest advance in laser treatment and although
it can offer significant advantages for certain patients we
would not recommend it as necessary for everybody.
Wavefront
laser technology was originally developed to measure distortions
that occur to light when it travels through our atmosphere
and enters an optical telescope. This same technology can
now measure the imperfections in an eye's optical system
25 times more precisely than regular methods. It does this
by measuring subtle variations which are known as ‘higher order distortions or aberrations’.
These account for up to 10% of all optical distortions,
even in normal eyes, and contribute to the ghosting, halos
and starbursts that some patients experience after standard
laser surgery.
With
the standard methods for measuring a prescription many people
may have the same refractive power. However, with VISX CustomVue
no two laser treatments are identical. Each individual eye receives
a very detailed personalised treatment designed to correct the
unique imperfections in vision.
Conventional
LASIK and LASEK eye surgery applies a symmetric sphere and cylinder
laser eye treatment. CustomVue wavefront-guided treatment, performed
on the VISX Star S4 laser, applies the full precision of the
WaveScan wavefront analysis to the laser eye treatment pattern.
Following
CustomVue laser vision correction, many people will see better
than they ever saw with glasses or contact lenses. This we call
your Personal Best Vision.
The
goal of LASIK or LASEK is to reduce your dependence on corrective
lenses, which for the majority of people is achievable using
standard methods. The CustomVue wavefront-guided procedure aims
to go one better than that in patients who may not otherwise
achieve optimum results using standard methods.
