The IOL-VIP system (Intraocular Lens for Visually Impaired People) has been developed to improve the central vision of patients with macular disease, in particular the dry form of age related macular degeneration.

The macula is a small area of the central retina which is responsible for central vision and the appreciation of fine detail and colour. It is susceptible to degeneration as we age. If this is mild it may cause few symptoms but if the degeneration progresses it can result in the loss of central vision, severely limiting the ability to read and drive.
