Michael Jeffrey

Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon
Following undergraduate training at Birmingham University Medical School, Mr. Jeffrey served as a Medical Officer in the Royal Navy. During his naval career Mr. Jeffrey served as Medical Officer on board HMS Bristol in the Falklands campaign and was appointed Consultant Ophthalmologist to the Royal Navy’s primary casualty receiving ship RFA Argus during the first Gulf War (1991).
Mr Jeffrey trained in Ophthalmology at a number of the UK`s leading eye hospitals including Moorfields and Addenbrooke`s, Cambridge.
In 1990 Mr Jeffrey became Consultant Ophthalmologist and Consultant Advisor to the Medical Director General (Navy). When he left the Royal Navy in 1993 Mr Jeffrey took up his present position of Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust.
His sub-speciality interests include medical and surgical management of glaucoma and cataract surgery. He has extensive experience in laser refractive surgery and has performed Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) since 1992 and Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) from 1999. He was Clinical Director of LaserVision (Europe), Harley Street, London, between 2004 and 2006.
Mr Jeffrey has been Chairman of the Corporate Speciality Education Committee in Ophthalmology and Programme Director for Ophthalmic training in Wessex. He is the Wessex Region representative of the Ophthalmic Group Committee of the British Medical Association. He also lectures to ophthalmologists in training, GPs, optometrists, nurses and medical students.
Mr Jeffrey is a member of a number of professional bodies including the British Medical Association, American Academy of Ophthalmology, European Glaucoma Society, United Kingdom and Ireland Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons and the Southern Ophthalmological Society.
